Design of the Week | God is a Woman by Ariana Grande
I have to admit, I've always been an Ariana Grande fan. She's a powerhouse vocalist and an outspoken feminist. Where her last album, Dangerous Woman, felt like a young woman trying on a new identity in order to find herself, 'God is a Woman' shows us that SHE IS HERE !!
In her video for 'God is a Woman,' Grande illustrates that a woman's sensuality and divinity can coexist. The song is ultimately about sex and a woman's right to equality in the bedroom. She uses some subtle and not so subtle iconography in the video so show that there is power in female sexuality. There is an odd part at 1:38 that includes some screeching marmots. At first I laughed, but after watching the video 5 times (it really is mesmerizing) I was reminded of the harmonic, primal screams from artists like Solange Knowles. Maybe the screams are meant to represent the intense frustration of women who are forced into the role of Madonna or whore (the marmots are in holes!!). I'll leave that up to you to decide.
I have to point out the irony in the fact that when I searched for "God is a Woman Ariana Grande," the majority of articles that popped up focused on Pete Davidson's reaction to the video. While his reaction is adorable, the song is about a woman reclaiming her sexuality for herself, and the internet is focused on the male gaze.
However, I did find one fab article on Glamour's website that breaks down the video if you are interested in learning more about our lord and savior, Ariana Grande.
